Throughout his autobiography, Olaudah Equiano defined himself as a native African. He used vivid illustrations of his homeland and experiences on the Middle Passage, and was even willing to defend the public’s view of him as a man of Africa. I personally define Equiano as a European citizen according to his customs, personal desires, and behavior. Equiano’s narrative played a key role in a variety of cultural, historical, and literary issues, therefore, the identification and ultimately the validity of its author take on special importance. While reading The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano I found it very apparent that Equiano viewed himself as an African born individual. He illustrated his culture and customs as an Igbo African in vivid details of culture, religion, law, and agriculture. (43-56) He also described the atrocities of the Atlantic slave trade as if he had recently experienced them: stating the smell, appearance, and reaction of his fellow slaves. 64-68) â€Å"Although culturally Equiano became â€Å"almost and Englishman,† embracing Christianity and British customs, the experiences Equiano shared with slaves and free people of color, and living in a world that did not differentiate between members of separate African communities, led him to consider himself also a son of Africa . † (21) Equiano embraced his African heritage throughout his life and even fought to uphold his reputation as such. There was an instance where two anonymous notes appeared in London papers charging that he was not from Africa at all, but was actually born on he Danish island of St. Croix in the Caribbean. Equiano realized that this claim falsified the validity of his Narrative and immediately confronted and threatened those responsible for the papers with legal action, providing actual witnesses of the fact that upon his arrival in England he was only able to speak an African language (24-25). This reaction shows that Equiano held much pride in his African identity and was willing defend it against those who claimed otherwise. However, there is evidence of significant authority that claims Equiano may have fabricated the origins of his identity. There are two certain documents, discovered by literary historian Vincent Carretta, that pinpoint the birthplace of Equiano in South Carolina that keep modern day scholars and historians from absolute certainty of his actual birthplace. One of these documents was written on February 9, 1759 in the baptismal registry of St. Margaret’s Church in Westminster, England. It read, â€Å"Gustavus Vassa (Olaudah Equiano) a Black born in Carolina 12 years old. † (26) The second document was from Equiano’s Arctic expedition in 1773. It claims that he was currently 28 years old and born in South Carolina. Neither of these findings is conclusive as to whether Equiano was African or American-born, but they certainly leave plenty of room for uncertainty. (26-27) I personally define Equiano as European, particularly an Englishman. Notions of English nationality are found in great abundance throughout the text. Equiano’s narrative repeatedly expresses his desire for a male English identity. He doesn’t view Englishness as a racially exclusive nationality, but one that evokes an ethnic identity that Equiano defines through Christianity, and citizenship. Two to three years after arriving in England Equiano claimed â€Å"I no longer looked at them as spirits, but as men superior to us; and therefore I had a stronger desire to resemble them; to imbibe their spirit, and imitate their manners I therefore embraced every occasion of improvement; and every new thing that I observed I treasured up in my memory. † (83) Here we see Equiano’s envy for his new â€Å"superiors† and his wish to possess their culture and belongings. This desire strongly encouraged my opinion of Equiano’s identity as European. My opinion was also influenced by Equiano’s acculturation into English society and customs during his early teen years. â€Å"I could now speak English tolerably well, and I perfectly understood everything that was said. I now not only felt myself quite easy with these new countrymen, but relished their society and manners. † (83) It is clear that Equiano identified his shipmates as his â€Å"countrymen† and personally enjoyed the interactions he had with each one of them. It was now between three and four years since I first came to England, a great part of which I had spent at sea; so that I became inured to that service, and began to consider myself as happily situated; for my master treated me always extremely well; and my attachment and gratitude to him were very great. From the various scenes I had beheld on ship-board, I soon grew a stranger to terror of every kind, and was, in that respect at least, almost an Englishman. † (83) This passage shows th at Equiano developed an affectionate relationship with his master and also that their bond strengthened Equiano’s identity as an adult man. Even more important, the identity Equiano is trying to proclaim for himself as an adult man, â€Å"a stranger to terror of every kind†, is as a European. There are also certain actions and beliefs that Equiano maintained that provoked the establishment of his European desires. For instance, he believed the only manner towards proper adulthood is as an Englishman. Equiano doesn’t come right out and say this but there is a point in the text where he noted that he considers himself very fortunate that he didn’t receive his family members’ tribal marking on his face, as is would have represented his entrance into mature Ibo manhood. As I was now amongst a people who had not their faces scarred, like some of the African nations where I had been, I was very glad that I did not let them ornament me in that manner† (69). As the reader first opens the legal foundations of witch-hunting, one finds that historically it was a judicial process from discovery to elimination. Levack states that before the thirteenth century European courts used a system of criminal procedure that made all crimes difficult to prosecute. This system was known as the accusatorial system and existed predominantly in northwestern Europe. When the thirteenth century came into being, a new technique, which gave more human judgement in the criminal process, was adopted in Western Europe secular courts. This new court was known as inquisitorial courts. The only difference between the new system and the old when suits were begun by accusation was that the accuser was no longer responsible for the actual prosecution of the case (pg. 72). The new procedures were not in reality an improvement due to the fact that the standards of proof according to inquisitorial procedure were very demanding. Since the adoption of inquisitorial procedure represented a shift from reliance upon man's rational judgement, jurists agreed that it was absolutely necessary for judges to have conclusive proof of guilt before passing sentence (pg. 79). They relied on Roman law and based their conclusions on two eyewitnesses and the confession of the accused. The development of full judicial power given to the state in the prosecution of a crime was a major event. From the early times, the secular courts in Europe had taken part in the witch-hunts, and now as the hunt developed further along, the secular courts grew an even greater role in the process. This caused a decline in ecclesiastical court participation due to the fact that governments defined witchcraft as a secular crime, and the temporal courts of some countries had a monopoly on the prosecution. The prosecution of magic was a "mixed jurisdiction" taken on by both courts but when convicted the guilty were executed under secular law. Since secular courts had jurisdiction over magic and maleficium they primarily assumed the significant role in prosecuting witches. The controversy was ignited by a book written by Gail Riplinger entitled New Age Bible Versions. The only thing sillier than the controversy is the book that sparked it. Remember the old joke? -- "If the King James Version was good enough for the Apostle Paul, then it's good enough for me!" Well, Riplinger tries to convert the joke into gospel. A Ridiculous Thesis Her thesis is that the King James Version is the one and only pure translation (in any language!) and that all the new translations that have flooded the market in recent years (including the most conservative) are part of a Satanic, New Age conspiracy to undermine the deity of Jesus and the credibility of God's Word. The book is mean-spirited and vicious in its attacks upon the godly evangelical scholars who labored so hard to produce the modern versions, not to undermine the Word, but to make it more understandable to the average reader. Unfortunately the book has spawned an army of Riplinger disciples who feel it is their god-ordained duty to go forth and purify the Church by demanding the exclusive use of the King James Version. Picking up on their mentor's divisive spirit, they are labeling as heretics all fellow Christians and Christian leaders who prefer to use some version other than the King James. To illustrate how insane this silliness has become, consider a recent article that appeared in the newsletter of one of Riplinger's most enthusiastic supporters, a prophecy teacher by the name of Texe Marrs. Calling the new conservative translations "unholy" and "grotesque," he proceeded to condemn four leading prophecy teachers because they refused to endorse Riplinger's book and join with him in certifying the King James Version as the only reliable translation. The four he condemned as "misguided leaders" and "false witnesses" were Dave Hunt, Peter LaLonde, Arno Froese, and John Ankerberg. Two of these, Hunt and Ankerberg, happen to be among the leading defenders of the Christian faith today! Even more incredible is the fact that all four men use the King James Version in their preaching and teaching -- and Marrs knows that they do! Still, they must be condemned as heretics because they refuse to denounce the "Satanic, New Age" versions.

Baguio City Places of Interest

Baguio City is home to many tourist spots and is a getaway of those living not only in Metro Manila, nearby lowlands but the entire Philippine populace. Established as the Summer Capital of the Philippines in 1903, Baguio City is the foremost tourist destination in the Philippines. Baguio City is blessed with a cool climate. It averages 20C or 68F which is around eight degrees lower than those of the lowlands including Manila. This alone, is enough reason to drive people from nearby and far away cities and provinces to go up to Baguio. That’s why even though it’s my fifth time to go in Baguio I’m still excited when our instructor finally told us that our 2-day educational tour will be in Baguio. Because still it’s my first time to go there not to do fundraising activity but to have fun and learning. Mention Baguio City, first few thoughts that came to my mind are pine trees, cool temperature, fresh vegetables, cultural and historical variety. So though I’m really sleepy because we departed early in the morning I can’t sleep because my classmate were so noisy and it’s a six-hour ride that’s why I find ways to enjoy myself while were travelling. While travelling I can really justify how creative our Almighty God is. Baguio is a city in a high altitude, a plateau that we can have a good view of the surrounding scenery. As our van went higher up however, we came upon a zigzag road, and I couldn’t help but pray that we may arrive safely. More than the fear however, is the excitement of the place that we will go through. My adventure in Baguio is one that I shall never forget. That’s why I’m recollecting now the pieces that are still vivid in my memory. Our first stop was Lion’s head were it was located on the way to Baguio. We only took pictures there, and then we immediately went back to the van. Our second stop was The Philippine Military Academy – the national training school for future officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. We also have few minutes there that’s why we directly took pictures then go! Next stop was Mines View Park where a spectacular panorama awaits us. The stunning creation around is overwhelming and for tourist’s to get a closer look of the vicinity, they can rent binoculars. But for us†¦ hmmm†¦ anyway we took pictures wearing Igorot clothes. And also Baguio souvenir items and other local products are available near the view deck. So after we took pictures since the time was too short we went back to the van then go! Then we went to the so called ‘Malacanang of the North† – The Mansion at Baguio Wright Park. It is used as the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines. Entry to the com pound is restricted. So we only view the Mansion through its gate which is patterned after that of London’s Buckingham Palace. Then again without wasting time we took pictures then we go! We had our lunch at SM Baguio. After that we precede to the Bell Church- a Chinese temple. One of the adorable and memorable spots in Baguio City for me was the Bell Church. This temple provides a peaceful, serene and refreshing atmosphere to Chinese people who want to meditate and reflect on their spiritual lives. In addition, the site has attractive features that reflect the history and culture of Chinese people. Baguio Bell Church has two well-crafted dragon structures at its entrance. It also features a wishing pond where I throw coins as I say my wishes because they said it will really happen. Also at the entrance of the temple is a Taoist leader who predicts future events. Then after taking pictures, we immediately went back to the van and go! Our next stop was strawberry farm. If a delightful dessert ends a sumptuous meal, the sweetest way to conclude a Baguio trip is through strawberry picking! This is a fun activity for everyone but unfortunately we didn’t do it due to the bad weather. So instead of picking we only bought strawberries and since there were also some souvenirs like key chains we also bought as our â€Å"pasalubong†. And it’s really amazing because this province was once recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for baking the largest strawberry cake. Ooppss!  It’s not yet done. Our last destination was Burnham Park. This place was my favorite, I really enjoy and I’m not worrying or thinking about time. So when our teacher gave us three hours to do what we want, together with my classmate I do boating and I can say that I really-really enjoy though it’s embarrassing because we don’t know how to move the boat, still I will treasure this moment. After boating, we rode bike and again with the cool climate and good scenery, I enjoy biking. The view was really good – tall pine trees, color flowers – and the air was so fresh I really wished I could take it back home! After we had dinner in SM Baguio, we go back in La Union. So in second day we did food raising for our food at the beach. I can say that swimming there was refreshing where it wash out for a while my worries and problems. So while others were cooking, we were playing. So in that time I can say that Sophies (sophomores) were really united†¦.. hehehehehe†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Though there were lots of circumstances or problems that came during our educational tour, I was still happy because we did some fun, had learning to share and the most important was that were complete when we return in IPLC. While travelling as I watched the creation of GOD and counted once more the many blessings God has given me, things I often took for granted, things many people like me ignore. Everyday, the world seems to tell us so many things we should grieve about. There were so many reasons why we should not be happy. But why dwell on these things? Edwin Perkins Invented Kool-Aid in the 1920s

Kool-Aid is a household name today.  Nebraska named Kool-Aid as its official state drink  in the late 1990s, while Hastings, Nebraska, the city where the powdered drink was invented, celebrates a yearly summer festival called Kool-Aid Days on the second weekend in August, in honor of their citys claim to fame, notes Wikipedia. If youre an adult, you likely have memories of drinking the powdered beverage on hot, summer days as a child. But, the story of Kool-Aids invention and rise to popularity is an interesting one—literally a rags-to-riches story. Fascinated by Chemistry Edwin Perkins (Jan. 8, 1889–July 3, 1961) was always fascinated by chemistry and enjoyed inventing things, notes the  Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History, in describing the inventor of the drink and its most famous resident. As a boy, Perkins worked in his familys general store, which—among other thinigs—sold a fairly new product called Jell-O. The gelatine dessert featured six flavors at the time, produced from a powdered mix. This got Perkins to thinking about creating powdered-mix drinks. When his family moved to southwest Nebraska at the turn of the (20th) century, young Perkins experimented with homemade concoctions in his mother’s kitchen and created the Kool-Aid story. Perkins and his family moved to Hastings in 1920, and in that city in 1922, Perkins invented the Fruit Smack, the forerunner of Kook-Aid, which he sold mainly via mail order. Perkins renamed the drink Kool Ade and then Kool-Aid in 1927, the Hastings Museum notes. All in Color for a Dime The product, which sold for 10 ¢ a packet, was first sold to wholesale grocery, candy, and other suitable markets by mail order in six flavors; strawberry, cherry, lemon-lime, grape, orange, and raspberry, notes the Hastings Museum. In 1929, Kool-Aid was distributed nationwide to grocery stores by food brokers. It was a family project to package and ship the popular soft drink mix around the country. Perkins was also selling other products by mail order—including a mixture to help smokers give up tobacco— but by 1931, the demand for the drink was so strong, other items were dropped so Perkins could concentrate solely on Kool-Aid, the Hastings museum notes, adding that he eventually moved production of the drink to Chicago. Surviving the Depression Perkins survived the Great Depression years by dropping the price for a packet of Kool-Aid to  just 5 ¢Ã¢â‚¬â€which was considered a bargain even during those lean years. The price reduction worked, and by 1936, Perkins company was posting more than  $1.5 million in annual sales, according to Kool-Aid Days, a website sponsored by Kraft Foods. Years later, Perkins sold his company to General Foods, which is now part of  Kraft Foods, making him a rich man, if a bit sad to cede control of his invention. On Feb. 16, 1953, Edwin Perkins called all his employees together to tell them that on May 15, ownership of Perkins Products would be taken over by General Foods, notes the Kool-Aid Days website. In a chatty informal way, he traced the history of the company, and its six delicious flavors, and how fitting it was now that Kool-Aid would join Jell-O in the General Foods family.
